While it may not be equitable, the fact is that a young driver will end up paying more in monthly insurance premiums than an older driver.  This occurs because the insurance companies feel that young drivers, especially teens, are a significantly higher risk.

Fortunately, there are a few steps a young driver can take to get cheap car insurance.  Let’s discuss a few of these.

Driver's Education Course

First, the easiest thing a teenager can do is attend a driver’s education class.  While you may not appreciate having to spend a summer at school, there are two benefits of doing so.  First, you will gain some much needed additional driving experience.  Second, the insurance companies will view you as less of a risk, often lowering your monthly premiums.

Defensive Driver Course

If you are a little older, then you may want to consider taking a defensive driver course.  While most people are forced to take this course after they receive a ticket, many insurance companies will lower your insurance rate if you voluntarily take one.

Reasonable Car

Another smart way to get the cheapest car insurance is to drive a reasonable car.  We define reasonable as something that is practical (so the Chevy Corvette is out the window) and isn’t high on the “Most Stolen” Cars list every year.  If you follow these guidelines, you will significantly increase your chances of getting cheaper car insurance.

Car Insurance Discounts

A fourth thing you could do is simply ask your insurance agent for a list of discounts.  While most insurance agents will not come right out and tell you, his or her company often has a whole litany of car insurance discounts available.  These discounts can be for anything from safety features (such as automatic seat belts, day time running lights, and anti – lock brakes) to safe driving discounts because you have not had a speeding ticket or car accident in the last three years.

Conclusion

As we have demonstrated, there are numerous ways to lower your monthly insurance premiums if you are a young driver.  If you invest the time to take a driver education or defensive driver course, you can easily lower your insurance premiums.  Heck, if you simply ask for a list of car insurance discounts offered by your insurance company, you may be surprised at how easy it really is to save money.  As a closing note, remember the adage; Time is money.  The longer you wait to take advantage of these money saving ideas, the more you will pay in the long run.
